The City of Decatur is in the midst of a 6 month pilot shuttle program (March through August 2013) on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for Oakhurst neighborhood residents age 60 and older to come to downtown Decatur thanks to a mini-grant from the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. The shuttle officially began March 13, 2013 in partnership with DeKalb County Human Development Department Office of Senior Affairs, which already has successful Golden Shuttles in Toco Hills and Chamblee. 

Several shuttle stops in Oakhurst will allow residents to come to the downtown Decatur commercial district to take advantage of services, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, public library, and government offices. It will provide access to entertainment and cultural opportunities at the Decatur Recreation Center, as well as on the square.

Riders must be Decatur residents aged 60 and older and register to ride the shuttle. Potential continuation of the shuttle will depend on the number of people who use it.

Oakhurst Community Garden Wylde Center.  Join us for the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day and a great chance for members of the community to come together and participate at the city’s OFFICIAL Earth Day Party! The City of Decatur, in partnership with the Wylde Center, will be holding its annual Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at the Oakhurst Garden at the corner of Oakview and South McDonough.  This is a celebration of Earth Day and a great chance for members of the community to come together and participate in celebrating the 43rd Anniversary of Earth Day at the city’s OFFICIAL Earth Day Party!  The celebration will kick off with a parade that will go from Harmony Park to the Oakhurst Garden, beginning at 12:30 pm.   The theme this year is Pirates. We have an exciting array of events planned for children, youth and adults and include,

• Free Kids Crafts • Live Music • A Live Raptor Show! (need we say more!)• Special Earth Day T-shirt contest• World Famous Cake Contest • And MORE!

The  community  pavilion-  vendor  and  education  tables-  will  be  interspersed  throughout  the Garden area and will be conducive to having parents walk through the tables while their children are participating in activities at a table nearby.  We are recruiting organizations in the community whose mission may coincide with that of Earth Day Celebrants and who are concerned with environmental stewardship issues.

• Event will be cancelled in the event of thunder and lightning, but not for light rain.

Oakhurst Presbyterian’s annual Gospelfest will be Saturday, April 27th at 6:30PM. We will enjoy music from several metro Atlanta gospel choirs. Admission is free, donations are welcome.  All proceeds will go to our scholarship funds for youth conferences and camps. Please include yourself and your family and friends for this wonderful evening of praise!

Thank you for your continued donations to our Clothes Closet through this spring!  The following donations would be greatly appreciated:newborn clothes for boys and girls, boys’ clothing sizes 6-10, socks for men and women, and dress ties.

Beat the Street for Little Feet 5K

Saturday, May 4, 8am at Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool

We are delighted to announce the return of Beat the Street for Little Feet to the City of Decatur! The race is now part of Decatur Active Living’s Grand Slam Fitness Challenge and will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 8:00 a.m. on a wonderful new course through the streets of Oakhurst. The start and finish points are at Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool, where we are excited to host the post-race celebration and kids’ festival.

Pete the Cat is back once again to grace our race t-shirts, thanks to the generosity of nationally renowned artist James Dean. Please register by Sunday, April 21 to be guaranteed a Pete t-shirt on race day. Can’t make it to the race? No problem – just register as a phantom runner by Friday, May 3 and we will mail a t-shirt directly to you.

In keeping with OCP’s commitment to sustainability, we will continue to “green” our race by employing several initiatives such as offering only compostable drinking cups. Special efforts will be made to collect any compostable or recyclable waste generated by the event. We also will host a Nike reuse-a-shoe drive in conjunction with the race.

Oakhurst Jazz Nights return –April 4, 11, 18, and 25 with a bonus night on Thursday, May 16

All concerts begin at 7 pm and end at 9 pm and are free and open to the public. The location is the lawn in front of The Solarium at 321 W. Hill St. 30030 in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur. Concerts take place rain or shine. The rain location is The Solarium.
